1821 The first polar expeditions reaches Svalbard
1863 Elling Carlsen, skipper from Tromsų, sails around Spitsbergen
1870-1905 Important period in Tromsų's hunting history. 20-40 polar vessels leave Tromsų every year to hunt in the Arctic Ocean
1893 and 1896 Fridtjof Nansen with "FRAM", leaves from and reurns to Tromsų after the drift-ice expedition to near the North Pole
1899 Skipper Soren Zakariassen from Tromsų ships the first cargo of coal from Svalbard
1918 Northern Norway Weather Forecasting Station is established
1920 The Svalbard treaty was written
1926 Roald Amundsen prepares his airplane expedition to the North Pole
